Raising The Fifth

No

By Rachel Turney

When I was thirty-four I went to my annual gynecologist appointment. At the end he asked me if
I had thought about freezing my eggs.
“No.”
“Do you want to have children?”
“No.”
“Because you could freeze your eggs. I can give you some information.”
“No!”

About the Poem

“It was this doctor’s appointment that showed me my true feelings about having children. I answered quickly and definitively and my doctor still didn’t listen. Now, six years later, I am, what I like to call, an electio-mother. I chose to be in a relationship with someone who has two children. It has been a challenge and a privilege to find a place in the lives of two exceptional young women. “
